In the distant future, “Ad Astra” focuses on astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt). McBride is a top notch astronaut who is able to control his feelings and emotions no matter what the environment is. When McBride is on the international space antenna when a “surge” from space destroys the antenna causing McBride to free fall back to Earth. His world is shattered when he is told that after 30 years, his father (Tommy Lee Jones) is supposedly still alive and is causing the “surges” that are destroying the world. McBride must travel to Neptune to find and stop the “surges” at all costs before the world is destroyed.
“Ad Astra” is slow burning, but good film. It is a very serious film that has no comedic relief throughout the movie. From the opening scene till the end credits, it is a very serious film. While the film never has an intense turning point, it still keeps the audience entertained. The story seems to miss the mark at a few points leaving the audience with many questions. A few unexpected plot twists will keep the audience guessing until the very end. Even though the story hits a few speed bumps, it still delivers a sublime story. The special effects in this film are phenomenal. The CGI of the space battles rivals some of the most iconic sci-fi films in history. The zero gravity effects are well done. The world created in this film is very realistic to what our world might look like in the future. The score in a space film is very important due to the silence of space and this film does not disappoint. The score helps immerse the audience in the film making sure that the audience stays intrigued. The acting in this film is very well done. The characters help bring this movie to life. Pitt does a good job at portraying the character he was given, but the script causes problems to relate to his character.
While “Ad Astra” has its good parts there were a few problems with this film. It was hard to relate to Pitt’s character due to the script writing. It is hard to relate to a character who shows no emotion no matter the problem. A few plot points created confusion for me especially when it came to the resolution of the film. The film does a good job about making a commentary on how humanity would deal with outer space. It shows how businesses commercialize outer space ruining the environment of space all for money. This film also shows how no matter where humanity goes and improves, corruption and crime will always follow. Despite the problems I had with the film it was still a good quality film. While I do not think that everyone will enjoy this film, I would recommend this film to people who love space movies. I give this film a 4 out of 5 film reels.
