“Last Christmas” is great, if you want the song stuck in your head for forever.

“Last Christmas” is focuses on a girl named Kate (Emilia Clarke). Kate works for Santa (Michelle Yeoh) as a Christmas elf while trying to become famous as an actress. Her mother (Emma Thompson) and Father (Boris Isakovic) have been very judgmental about Kate’s life decisions. Kate and bad luck go together like peanut butter and jelly, that is until she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a man who volunteers at the homeless shelter. Tom will make Kate reevaluate her life including the relationships she has with her entire family. Tom helps Kate to make this the last Christmas that she lives a selfish life.

“Last Christmas” is a romantic comedy, focusing on the comedy that the holidays can create in one’s life. The writing of this film is very well done. There is a Hallmark Christmas movie vibe to this motion picture. There are a few plot twists in this film. However, there is one scene in this film that is unnecessary to the plot and uses plenty of vulgar language which is not present in the rest of the film. That scene ruins the holiday vibe of the film and if the scene was removed it would not have affected the plot of the film. Clarke does an excellent job at playing a self-centered, holiday scrooge while being able to create a caring relationship with the audience. The chemistry from Clarke and Golding in their relationship is very powerful. Yeoh’s acting is outstanding in this film. Her character helps bring this movie to life and brings much of the comedy into this movie. The song “Last Christmas” is played many times throughout this film that is starts to feel like the only song that exists to celebrate Christmas. Even though this song is played an almost annoying amount of times, “Last Christmas” gives this song a new meaning. However, the song will be played enough that even a year after you’ve seen it, you won’t want to hear it again. The score is very well done and helps create emotion that keeps the audience immersed in the movie.

“Last Christmas” is a very well done Christmas film that will put the audience into the Christmas spirit. I really enjoyed watching this comedy.  It is a really good Christmas film that is unlike many of the stereotypical romantic Christmas movies. There are a few cheesy moments throughout including puns to the song “Last Christmas”, but it did not take away from the quality of the movie. I would recommend this film to people ages fifteen and up do to some of the content in this motion picture. I give this film a 3 out of 5 film reels.
