Timmy Failure Mistakes Were Made is the amazing tale of an 11-year old boy, Timmy Failure (Winslow Fegley), who believes he is a better detective than Sherlock Holmes and Timmy’s Watson happens to be a 1,200 pound imaginary polar bear named Total Failure. Together they have created the Total Failure Inc.. Timmy and Total must find the person who stole the Failure Mobile before his mom, Patty Failure (Ophelia Lovibond), finds out. However, there is one thing that Timmy believes is stopping him from solving this case, the 5th grade.
This Disney+ original movie is very good. The CGI work throughout is very well done, especially the work on the polar bear. The storytelling is mediocre. This film takes the audience into the imagination of Timmy and how he sees the world. It will take everyone back in time to remember the good old days of 5th grade and how simple everything was. However, the issue with this was at certain times it was hard to figure out when we were in Timmy’s imagination or if it was reality. The writing of this motion picture really struggles to allow people to connect with the characters. The cast was not an all star cast. Fegley did an okay job at playing an 11-year old boy who is an old soul. Lovibond shows how hard the struggle is for a single mom trying to work, pay the bills, while taking care of a boy who happens to get into trouble. Timmy’s school therapist, Mr. Jenkins (Craig Robinson), is the sound of reason throughout the film, showing how he will do whatever it takes to get through to Timmy and convince him to open up. The story will keep the audience guessing who stole the Failure Mobile until the very end. The score and soundtrack definitely adds to the picture keeping the viewer submerged in the story.
Disney thought this would be a home run, but too may mistakes were made. Some of the things in the film got lost in translation. Timmy wears a red scarf throughout the film and talks about how important it is to him, but the movie never shows us why this scarf is important. I also wish that the film showed why Timmy started his detective agency. I believe that the filmmaker made the assumption that we had read the books when making this movie or else he would have gone into more detail. This film cannot stand with any current competition in the box offices, which is why it is a good thing it went straight to Disney+. It is a good movie for a family movie night. There are things for everyone of all ages to enjoy. While it may not reach the bar of typical cinema, it does not stand to the level of Disney’s live action remakes such as Aladdin, The Lion King, and Dumbo. I would rate this film 1.5 out of 5 film reels.
