“Sonic The Hedgehog” went a little too fast.

This motion picture focuses on a small, blue, fast hedgehog named Sonic (Ben Schwartz). Sonic, being hunted by everyone, flees his home planet to seek sanctuary on Earth. Sonic goes into hiding for ten years, observing life on Earth from afar when Sonic accidentally causes a power surge, alerting the authorities to his location. The authorities send their best, slightly unconventional scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey). With nowhere left to run, Sonic turns to local police officer Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) who goes helps Sonic in his efforts to escape from the clutches of Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic The Hedgehog is a very interesting take on a classic video game franchise. The CGI of this film is absolutely phenomenal. The CGI of Dr. Robotnik’s drones are insanely realistic. Sonic’s animation is almost life-like in quality. The cinematography is very well done. The camera work used in Sonic’s “speed-time” is very well done. The use of panoramic, birds eye view, and running shots creates the imaginary environment this film takes place in. The acting of this movie is very well done. Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik was excellent. Carrey steals the show with his amazing expressions, voices, and movement. He is the center of attention whenever he is on the screen. Schwartz does a great job voicing Sonic. The writing of this film is mediocre. The fast paced storytelling made it hard to keep up with the story. While the plot is creative, there needs to be more time in the slow lane before kicking it into 3rd gear. The story does not take time to establish the characters before the plot begins running. Sonic’s backstory is one of mystery and not much is explained. The score in this motion picture is excellent. It helps set the tone and provokes the viewers emotion at the right times. It allows the audience to be immersed into Sonic’s world.

Despite the bad publicity this film received with Sonic’s original look from the first trailer, I did enjoy the movie. I thought it was a good film adaptation from one of the best video games. The film was very fast paced, but I still had time to check my watch a few times to see how much time was left. Sonic’s catchphrase “gotta go fast” was the motto of the story causing the story to go a little too fast. There should have been more time establishing characters and less time watching Sonic run in circles. I felt as if baby Sonic is a little forced as if it was trying to compete with The Child from The Mandalorian and baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While the writing was not the best in this film, there is a post credit scene that blew my mind. I recommend this film to anyone who loves video games or has an appreciation for Sonic. I rate this film a 3.5 out of 5 tiger paws.
