Riddle me this: Who is dark, brooding and lives in the shadows? Vengeance.

This film tells a story of Batman early in his career working alongside Lieutenant James Gordan (Jeffery Wright) to catch a serial killer, known as The Riddler (Paul Dano), who is executing corrupt members of the justice system. While hunting for The Riddler, Batman will cross-paths with many new characters including Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Director, Matt Reeves, makes his mark on a unique take on the caped crusader the world has come to love. Reeves tells a refreshing new story bringing in villains that have not been in a live action movie since the 90s.

There are several elements in this film that are spectacular. The cinematography and score are a work of art that keep the audience intrigued for the entire length of the film. Reeves does an excellent job at making the audience feel connected to the movie throughout the entire experience, and the music adds a captivating sense of suspense that keeps them on the edge of their seats. Pattinson’s take on Batman is one of the best. The chemistry that Pattionson and Kravitz share is undeniable.

“The Batman” earned the AMC Artisan Film title which is unheard of for a superhero film. To become an Artisan Film, a movie must do a number of things.

1. Bring a unique vision or perspective. 2. Push boundaries and spark conversation. 3. Stretches actors outside their comfort zones. 4. Unites acclaimed cast. 5. Features a compelling score.

All of these are reasons that make this movie stand out from other superhero movies that have recently come out.

My drawbacks to this film is that there are a few pacing issues in the third act. Besides the pacing issues, it was a wonderful movie. I also was hoping to see more Bruce Wayne, but I do understand that, being this early in the life of Batman, his character has not yet learned the pros of being a Wayne.

Even though the trailers looked enjoyable and the reviews were looking good, I was unsure of what to think going into this movie. I was instantly blown away by this film. I cannot wait to see Pattinson take up the cowl again in the next film. I am also very excited for the HBOMax spin off shows, the first about Lieutenant Gordan getting rid of the corruption in the Gotham Police Department and the other focusing on The Penguin’s rise to power.

One last riddle: What has an amazing story, a great score and a 4.5 out of 5 Film Reels? “The Batman” showing exclusively in theaters.
