Moving at the speed of sound, he is the quickest hedgehog around. Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is living his best life in Green Valley Hills with Officer Tom Wachowski/The Donut Lord (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter). Dr. Robotnik/Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey) has been banished to the mushroom planet, trying to get back to Earth to get revenge on Sonic. Eggman can’t escape the planet until an echidnas appears ,who goes by the name Knuckles (Idris Elba), and  helps Eggman get back to Earth. Together they plan to hunt Sonic down, find the Chaos Emerald and rule the world. However, their plans go awry when Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) shows up to help Sonic save the world.

“Sonic The Hedgehog 2” (2022) has a well written plot that will keep the audience on the edge of their seat and make them laugh throughout the entire film. Whenever the film focused on the story with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman the movie makes great strides, but when the film focused on the side story of The Donut Lord at his sister in law’s wedding, the story seems to drag. 

The writers did an excellent job of taking elements from the Sonic video games to create an original story that will resonate with both new Sonic fans and fans of the original video game.

The CGI of this film is absolutely phenomenal. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles look insanely realistic. Eggman’s drone looked amazing in the first film and they look even better in the sequel.

One of the best parts of the film is the acting. Carrey absolutely carries the entire film on his back with his skills and improv. It made the movie so much fun to watch because of Carrey. Schwartz and Marsden have great chemistry which makes their scenes so much fun to watch. Elba did such an amazing job at being the voice actor for Knuckles that every moment Knuckles was on screen made me smile. 

The Sonic The Hedgehog franchise has been an impressive film series that has gone from the most hated on the internet when the original Sonic design was revealed to the biggest video game box office opening day record with “Sonic The Hedgehog 2”. 

I absolutely loved watching this movie. It was so much fun getting to see Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all on the big screen together, along with seeing the epic battle against Dr. Eggman. I do wish that they had focused mainly on that story. Giving The Donut Lord his own subplot took away from the enjoyment of the film because it did not add to the plot. Overall, I thought the sequel was a major improvement from the original and I cannot wait to see what is in store for “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” and the new Knuckles spin-off series that will be on Paramount+ in 2024. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is available to watch on Paramount+ and DVD. This film gets 4 out of 5 film reels.
